Alive and Swinging

Where would you see Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Amy Winehouse and Carmen Miranda all in the same place? Well, in heaven, of course. Or failing that, The Old Market. The venue worked perfectly for this comic cabaret, with the large stage and the mix of cabaret and bleacher-style seating giving everyone a good view. Ably backed by The Burning Love Band, Laura Nixon played a deliciously naughty Marilyn, a potty-mouthed Amy and a slightly unsure Carmen Miranda, seeking audience approval with “You like me, yes?”, while Jim Devereaux as Elvis oozed sex appeal. Marilyn was close to disintegrating into drunkenness towards the end, but fortunately it was still very funny.
