Dead Belgian
The band are named after Jacques Brel and proved themselves to be faithful and passionate keepers of his flame. Singer/guitarist Fionnuala Dorrity interpreted each song with panache, her strong voice exhibiting a Piaf quiver that fitted perfectly on Brel’s soul-baring mini-dramas set to music. Multi-instrumentalist Simon James dazzled on reeds and mandola; his flute playfully floating over ‘Don’t Leave Me’. The grandstanding Jacky began as a rueful ballad before erupting into a frenetic polka, while ‘Sons Of’ added glockenspiel to give a lighter but menacing feel. Their unique take on this oft-covered repertoire was authentic yet freshly re-imagined.
