Family-friendly fun at this year’s Brighton Festival

It’s a kid thing

With former children’s laureate Michael Rosen acting as the Guest Director of Brighton Festival this year, it’s no surprise that the city and beyond will play host to a number of exciting, innovative and interactive family-friendly events this May.

As well as embarking on a very special Bear Hunt for under 5s (5 May) and delving into the world of Emil and the Detectives with Young City Reads (24 May), Michael will whisk audiences back in time with the World Premiere of The Great Enormo – A Kerfuffle In B Flat For Orchestra, Wasps And Soprano (4 May). This fun exploration of the orchestra, its instruments and the history of music sees Brighton Festival audiences help create a theme tune for Mr Enormo Biggins’ magnificent theme park. Strap yourselves in tight as it’s going to be quite the ride!

The adventures continue with Tam Teatromusica’s delightful Picablo (5–7 May) who bring to life– quite literally – some of Pablo Picasso’s most famous pieces of art. Fusing technology and theatre to create an enchanting visual world where pictures come to life in front of your very eyes. Picablo is a show unlike anything you’ve seen before!

From one colourful world to another, Varmints (21–22 May) follows the poignant tale of a small creature and his attempts to preserve a world of greenery, peace and quiet against the ever-threatening humdrum of busy city life. Will he succeed? A physical dance piece for children aged 8 and over, the performance has been adapted from the award-winning book of the same title by Helen Ward and features stunning choreography from children theatre specialist Sally Cookson.
Get ready for a packed month of festival fun!
