Celebcity: Macauley Culkin’s rock star behaviour,
A Royal call
We don’t usually associate telephone services with glamour – but when it comes with Royal approval, one makes exceptions. Voipfone, a pioneering telephony company that uses the internet to send and receive telephone calls, has won a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise – the UK’s highest accolade for business success. The award, in the Innovation category, is the latest in a long line of recognition for the groundbreaking company that was co-owned by Colin Duffy of Rottingdean, Brighton. Announced on HRH’s birthday – 21 April – the Brightonian is delighted with his accolade, commenting: “I’m extremely proud that Voipfone has won this award. It seemed very unlikely at first that we could qualify – after all it’s the most prestigious award in UK business – but as we completed the very detailed application, it became increasing apparent that the innovations in technology, finance, organisation, operations and customer service that we’d worked so hard on over the years, are special.” Congratulations to the local company – we’re off to make some regal phone calls.
Home Alone star’s rock star behaviour
Richie Rich – AKA Macaulay Culkin – made an impression when he visited Brighton last week. After watching a friend’s gig at The Haunt Culkin left the venue in a frenzy ‘cursing and screaming’ according to reports. No one is quite sure what upset the former child-star, but either way he was having none of it, launching himself at a waiting photographer. It certainly wasn’t the kind of high-jinx fighting we know and love him for in the Home Alone movies! In day old clothes and statutory Ray Bans and camouflage scarf Culkin then escaped via a waiting van andswept off to his swanky hotel – the Ibis. The actor had been accompanying his friend Adam Green on tour around the UK, with staying in the Holiday Inn up in Manchester and being mistaken as a tramp in London no doub beingt personal highlights. In Bristol he even took the stage to join in a Beach Boys cover – a surprising choice for the increasingly angsty looking star who was described as ‘spaced out’ by a fan. With Brighton marking the end of the band’s British tour I think maybe it’s time for Culkin to go home and take it easy.
Models in dinosaur onesies
Woman of the moment Cara Delevingne and fellow model Jourdan Dunn recently discussed the moment they first met on Dunn’s online cookery show, and it turns out it was right here on our beautiful (“very rocky”) beach! In the first episode of the second series, which runs on Jay-Z’s YouTube channel ‘Life + Times’, the two supermodels discuss their BFF-ship whilst cooking shrimp tempura and rocking dinosaur onesies. Apparently the pair met on a cold wintry shoot on the seafront, when Jourdan over-heard “a white girl rapping”, the rest, as they say – is history – and long may the well-documented love-in last. Head over to YouTube to catch the chat now.
Get RiRi’s green nails!
Instagram-happy singer Rihanna posted a picture of some highly enviable nails recently that had us lusting over them in the office. She tweeted, “#NAILBOSS @kimmiekyees did an acrylic fill and gel polish mani on a moving tour-bus #tiffanyblue #NYbound” alongside a picture of some slick green talons. Kimmie Kyees is a nail artist to the stars, whose clients include the likes of Katy Perry and Adele. We might not be able to bag Kimmie herself but luckily for us we know exactly where to get these nails done right here in Brighton! The gloss RiRi chose is Artistic Colour Gloss in ‘Charming’ and is available at The Lanes Health and Beauty salon. Odell hand delivers special edition records
Tom Odell, the BRITS Critics Choice, released a very special four track 12” vinyl recorded in London for Record Store Day titled ‘The Daytrotter Recordings’, on Saturday 20 April, and has hand-delivered copies to his favourite Brighton record store! It follows the release of his debut single ‘Hold Me’ and is a precursor to his much anticipated debut album Long Way Down, set for release via I.T.N.O/Columbia Records on 24 June.
The four tracks were recorded on Monday 15 April in London and was set for a highly limited vinyl run. Tom then hand delivered the vinyl to Resident Records in Brighton.
Tom said: “When I found out I had the opportunity to release something for Record Store Day I was excited. Just the chance to get back in the recording studio seemed very appealing. I wanted to do something different. The thing I love about Record Store Day is that the releases are completely unique. It’s one of the few moments when you can find and own something that won’t be available anywhere else. It becomes more personal.”
