Two police officers hurt after car chase through Brighton

A man has been arrested after a police chase through Brighton which left two officers injured.

The officers detained a 28-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving, assaulting police and having drugs with intent to supply.

Sussex Police said that they became suspicious of a silver Ford Focus being driven along Old Shoreham Road.

They signalled to the driver to stop in Union Road, at the northern end of The Level, but he didn’t.

Instead he drove north up Lewes Road, turned left into St Mary Magdelene Street and then left into Upper Lewes Road and crashed into a car coming the other way.

The driver, a member of the public, was not hurt.

The driver then drove straight into Viaduct Road going against the one-way system.

At this point the officers halted their pursuit because of the danger.

The driver then turned right into Preston Road and headed north before stopping just off Dyke Road Drive.

He tried to evade the two officers who had caught up and were detaining him. In the struggle the officers suffered facial injuries.

Sussex Police said that the officers did not need hospital treatment and were back on duty yesterday (Tuesday 30 April).

The suspect, a Londoner, was arrested and treated for minor injuries at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Heroin and cash were seized from the car.

Yesterday the suspect was still in police custody awaiting interview and while officers carried out further inquiries.

Detective Sergeant Julian Deans said: “We are appealing for anyone who saw the Focus while it was being pursued to contact us via 101.”
