Jonny & The Baptists

Jonny Donahoe, and his pal ‘The Baptists’ aka Paddy Gervers provided us with a mix of old and new comical and satirical songs interspersed with the charming glass-cut banter that has brought them to the happy attention of BBC Radio 4 of late. Stand-out highlights included ‘Robert’, a surprisingly touching love song full of energy, and a powerful blues song that drew attention to the rules still in place banning homosexuals from giving blood with a nifty context that made them all the more likeable. The middle section of new songs was engaging (although a song regarding Margaret Thatcher’s funeral already felt dated), but the bookending classics were where the real gems could be found. A thoroughly enjoyable pair, leaving everyone on a feelgood high.
