Wired Sussex, Hamptons’ bake-off, the Business & Pleasure Summit, Montefiore Hospital & more

Charity bake-off

On Friday 26 April Hamptons’ Hove office held a “Bake Off” competition for Cancer Research, where the staff participated baking cakes, members of the public popped in to donate, vote and help choose the winning cake.

Hamptons International is proud to be supporting Cancer Research. They have set a  fundraising target of £100,000 for 2013. Through their office network they will be carrying out many fundraising events throughout the year. Our very own Andrew Kay voted for Louise Stanford’s Chocolate and Guinness cake as winner in the bake-off.

Independent Drugs Commission Report
On Thursday 18 April at the Brighthelm Centre the final recommendations from the Independent Drugs Commission were revealed. MP Caroline Lucas was in attendance and a panel made of the chair, author Peter James, member Kate McKenzie and vice-chair Michael Trace. They recommended the idea of setting up drug consumption rooms saying they should be considered as a way to reduce drug-related deaths in Brighton & Hove. The report has now been presented to the Safe in the City Partnership Board.

Wired Sussex
Wired Sussex recently held an event for their newly launched initiative, The FuseBox. Based in New England House, The FuseBox is a support space dedicated to the delivery of a new type of business assistance, specially designed for the creative, digital and technology sector.

The FuseBox is a Wired Sussex initiative in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council and is funded as part of the EU Interreg ReCreate Project.

Art At Five
One of our favourite local galleries, Art At Five, presented a new exhibition, ‘Wonderment’, on Friday 26 April, showcasing the work of three accomplished artists: Marie Mills, Deborah Flueler-Jones and Yvonne Coomber.

The exhibition celebrates spring with an enchanting collection of floral landscapes and contemporary abstracts that capture the beauty and transience of the awakening season. “Wonderment” is a free exhibition running until 12 May.

The Business and Pleasure Summit
On 19 April Brighton Summit put together a one day of doing business in a city built for pleasure. This major business event celebrated the centenary of Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce with a full day of speakers, workshops, panel debates, discussions, networking. Both Chamber members were in attendance as well as the media, the council, NHS and transport. With MC Steve Bustin, keynote speakers Peter James and Sam Roddick; The Media Panel: ‘Thanks to the internet, is the future of our media online?’ speakers, Bill Smith, Michael Beard, Adam Tinworth and James Ledward . www.brightonsummit.com

Brian Eno presents his art at the Montefiore Hospital
The world renowned artist and musician Brian Eno visited the Montefiore Hospital in Hove on Thursday 18 April to speak about his light and sound installations. The Montefiore is the only hospital in the world to feature Brian Eno’s work

Spiegel Garden
The magnificent Famous Spiegel Garden celebrated their opening in Brighton with a launch party at The Mesmerist on 30 April.
The programme – which runs until 2 June – has the unforgettable five-star La Clique at its heart. A magical cabaret like no other, La Clique has scooped a whole host of awards, including an Olivier, and it is returning to Brighton for the world premiere of its new production.

The Spiegeltent also plays host to the kabaret noir of Time Out award winners, Mikelangelo & The Black Sea Gentlemen
