We’re Gonna Die

Experimental playwright Young Jean Lee and her band Future Wife put on an inspiring show at The Dome Studio Bar. We’re Gonna Die is the ninth production in a series of 13 which was originally created in conjunction with 12 other playwrights. The show subtly uses stories from Lee’s own life and songs to explore ideas of mortality and overcoming adversity to lull the audience into a contemplative and reflective state, thereby addressing their own lives.

In this aim, Lee was incredibly effective but there were moments which caused the collective confrontation to jar. For example Lee’s movements during songs were often awkward and a bizarre group interpretative dance at the end did not immediately appear relevant. However these were minor shadows in what was otherwise a thought-provoking and engaging performance.
