2013 Conversations with Tony Benn

This Labour Representation Committee meeting didn’t start well as a key speaker (and Tony Benn’s ride) was taken ill, leaving Tony to arrive late by train. However, following a speech by a GMB shop steward on the current Cityclean strike, political commentator Ellie Mae O’Hagan gave a well-informed young person’s perspective of the current state of the Labour party. Mr Benn finally entered to a standing ovation but spoke only briefly before taking questions. The Socialist statesman discussed the rise of the far-right, voter apathy and explained his anti-EEC stance, commanding attention and speaking with a conviction and passion that belied his advanced years.
