Angélique Kidjo
On her first visit to Brighton Angélique Kidjo took the city by storm. A tourniquet tight band, her passion for music, her political conscience and, of course, that phenomenal voice – potent ingredients which produced an extraordinarily engaging and dynamic show. The audience were encouraged, much to the steward’s chagrin, to get up and dance and to join her on stage. My companion proceeded to dance her dainty derriere off. At one point Ms Kidjo abandoned the stage and sang her way around the auditorium. A health and safety nightmare, but an utterly magical evening of sublime music. The highlight of the Festival? You bet. The support, Josephine Oniyama, was excellent too. Check her out.
