Brighton armed robbery suspect kept in prison to await sentence

The man accused of carrying out three armed robberies in Brighton is to be kept in prison while he awaits sentence.

Darren Mills, 33, of no fixed address, is accused of holding up staff at knifepoint at three shops in Brighton.

He was arrested in Kemp Town on Saturday evening (11 May) by Sussex Police after a thwarted robbery at the Co-op in St George’s Road.

Brighton magistrates remanded him in custody until Friday 2 August when he is due to be sentenced in the crown court.

Mills was charged with the attempted robbery on Saturday as well as robberies at

  • Threshers in St George’s Road in Kemp Town on Sunday 5 May
  • the Co-op store in Carden Avenue in Hollingbury on Monday 6 May
  • another branch of Threshers in St George’s Road on Thursday 9 May

He has also been charged with four counts of having an offensive weapon and, on Thursday 25 April, escaping lawful custody.
