Lionel Shriver: Who Needs Another Book?

The New Writing South Annual Lecture was a wise, waspish and witty meditation on the novelist’s psyche by bestselling author Lionel Shriver. Her in-depth analysis on what draws her both to the writing of novels, to the subject matter of those novels and, crucially, what factors determine what the next project will be, provided a penetrating insight into the writing life for both the general reader and those hoping to write their own novels. The lengthy, and very generous, Q&A further illuminated the writing process. Lionel Shriver’s forthright approach was perfectly judged. The audience clearly loved her. My companion clapped until her palms were sore.
