Brighton After Dark: 14th May 2013

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside, oh I do like to be beside the sea
You’ll recognise this ditty sung by every Englishman/woman who has ever packed an icebox and headed for the coast. It’s a guarantee that every train coming from London, Thursday-through-Saturday, will be full of the capital’s beards and weirds humming it, as they descend on our little city for the boozy-woozy music celebration that is The Great Escape.
The festival is the season’s opening gambit, serving as the country’s premier urban exposé of new bands and established talent. This year is no different, seeing big-hitters like Billy Bragg and Bastille sharing a bill with dark popsters Eighties Matchbox and Black Heart Rebellion. Somewhere in the middle you’ve got the likes of indie ne’er do-wells Girls Names and national-treasure-in-waiting Ed Harcourt, and let’s be honest we’re PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT IT.
As befitting Brighton’s most dedicated music station we are going to be tearing round the city, seeing gigs, talking to bands and generally shoving mics in faces. Lord knows, we might even find the time to have a few drinks too.
We’re going to be putting together a special version of our Noise Reel show for the occasion, where we’ll be documenting the best bands, bars and badmen we’ve seen. Also, very importantly, we’ll be tweeting about all our adventures throughout, so if you haven’t started following us yet (cue cross face), then trot on over to Twitter and type in this easy handle: @Bmusic_TV
On a (vaguely) serious note, we’re really buzzing for this and really want to do bring something exciting to the table for all music-lovers from Brighton (and beyond) to love.
See you down the front.

SUMMER HOT WUK
The undisputed bashment heavyweight champions of the world return to heat up the venue. More fire, more naughtiness and more dancehall. Drinks are getting stronger, the sun’s getting brighter, music’s getting louder and the days are getting longer. Summer’s nearly here. The Heatwave crew spend all year raving like they are on a beach in the Caribbean, finally the calendar is catching up with them. Plus Zi Zi Scandal, the maddest carnival dancer on road and music from Brighton badman DJ Dubl alongside the Dagger Soundsystem. They will be partying to Sean Paul, Rihanna, Vybz Kartel and Mavado with the volume turned up LOUD.

MAYFAIR FRIDAYS BRINGS BACK AFROBEATS!!
After last Friday at Hed Kandi I have to take the chance to tell everyone how busy it was. DJ Larizzle made a comeback with the afrobeats! You can now hear all your favorite R’n’B, bashment, hip-hop, funky and commercial tunes follwed by AFROBEATS every week! With cheap drink deals and free entry for ladies before 11.30pm, I’m sure this is my spot for the summer!
Yates on a Thursday night is re-inventing itself as a club night rather than a pre-drinking bar! Mad For It have taken the role in hosting West Street’s exciting new night. With madcap and mayhem, they are the freshest rave in town! The past weeks they have had a bank holiday foam party, a rodeo night with a bull that saw hundreds of people turn up to, and even a school-themed night with everyone dressed up! With £1.50 drinks and cheap entry, you’re bound to have an interesting night! As goes for the music, expect nothing more than chart hits, commercial, R’n’B, club classics and an odd bit of house and old skool garage! You can catch Mad For It each and every Thursday night at Yates Brighton! I know I’ll be there!

JETS (MACHINEDRUM & JIMMY EDGAR – DJ SET), MARKINGS + DOMINION + HEAVENLY JUKEBOX, FREE ENTRY IF YOU BRING A PIECE OF BROKEN TECH
Having both experienced their own solo success and acclaim over the past decade, clocking up releases for labels such as Warp, !K7, Hot Flush, LuckyMe and more, good friends Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar teamed up to release their first set of co-productions in 2012 with the brilliant Jets EP coming out on Leisure System. That was quickly followed by a heavily hyped DJ mix for the FACT magazine website and it’s with a lot of excitement that they’ll be making a rare UK appearance together for Make Noise in Brighton.
Picking up where the tour left off in November – which successfully completed five dates across the UK with Radio 1’s Benji B, and included guest appearances from the likes of DJ Die, Ossie, Greenmoney, Martelo and Kidnap Kid – Make Noise will now be visiting Life in Brighton with two of America’s most exciting talents in electronic music, as Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar join forces for a special Jets DJ set on Thursday 16 May.

Brighton Noise
Andy Hinton on this week’s best gigs
This week’s column is all about one thing. Yes people, The Great Escape hits town on Thursday for three days of music, sore feet, sore heads and industry bods with bits of cardboard round their necks annoying the patiently queuing ordinary mortals.
We’ve been publishing our recommended artists for a few weeks now and all our coverage can be reached by clicking on the logo at the top of the website. We will also be publishing a guide to how to get the best out of the three days. Through experience it can either be the best three days of music you will see all year in Brighton or… a total disaster. This is down to how you approach the festival so if you are a newbie, our guide will be invaluable reading.
OK, a quick run-through of some of our picks. Grin-tastic Canadian Mac DeMarco’s music is infectious and his live performances even more-so. Melody’s Echo Chamber, the best gig I’ve been to so far this year. The thrilling and original ON AN ON. Ridiculously talented London teen, King Krule. US hardcore punkers, Title Fight. Belfast’s Girls Names, responsible for one of my favourite albums of this year. Local indie-poppers Fear Of Men who were perfect when supporting Melody’s. For the more metal minded we have Hacktivist… pause for breath… Aussie ‘folktronica’ songstress Caitlin Park is pretty special. The throbbing electro of Humans (yet another class Canadian band). OQuadro from Brazil with their infectious dub, afro-beat and latin infused hip-hop.
That’s just a taster and by the time you read this there should be plenty more suggestions on the site. For those without tickets there’s also the Alternative Great Escape and guess what? Brighton Noise are putting on our first ever event on Thursday. This is going to be special. A great local line-up: Nordic Giants, Dark Horses, AK/DK, Black Black Hills, Monsters Build Mean Robots and Cat Fire Radio. We start at 1pm, finish at 10.30 and are taking over the stage in front of Moshimo (Moshi Moshi). It’s free for everyone and judging by the popularity of these bands is gonna be busy. We’re just all praying for sun but it takes place in a big tent just in case.
There’s always a special atmosphere in town during the three days especially when the sun is shining. I can’t wait.
