Great Escape: Elisapie & Hjaltalin

One of the best ways to see the most diverse line-ups is to go to an overseas showcase and this Icelandic/Canadian event was a great example. Anglo/French/Inuit Elisapie’s dreamy, little girl voice backed wonderfully by her two guitarists/percussionists’ backing vocals was the perfect soundtrack for a sunny afternoon. Hjaltalin’s magical sound could only have been born in Iceland, with its blend of orchestral instrumentation and technology creating a nocturnal soundscape. The two singers: he slightly gruff, she a high octave semi-classical diva, complimented each other exquisitely on a delightful set of new material. A perfect way to start the weekend.
