Great Escape: The Strypes

The hype around this young Irish band led to a roadblock on New Road, with the venue at capacity long before they took to the stage. Dressed in sharp Mod suits, with singer Ross Farrelly in shades throughout, they played a set of maximum r ‘n’ b comprised of originals that authentically recreated the early sixties sound of the suburbs and covers that were key influences on The Stones and The Yardbirds. ‘See See Rider’ and ‘Can’t Judge A Book’ were performed with an assuredness impressive for a bunch of teenagers and while they offer nothing new, they are young and talented enough to grow into a fine band.
