No Man’s Land

With a bit more attention to the visuals this could have been a really good production of No Man’s Land. The roles were well cast and nicely acted, with John Tolputt producing a classic, frightfully posh but alcoholically befuddled Hirst, John Harnett an alternately confident and grovelling trickster Spooner, and Marc Valentine and Tobias Clay a menacing Briggs and a sinister Cockney Foster. But with virtually no set, mirrors on the walls and harsh white spotlights shining into the eyes of the audience, it was difficult to picture the scene as a well-to-do flat in Hampstead rather than the theatre bar.
