Varmints

Varmints was a minimalist, but beautifully staged production with countryside and cityscapes projected onto a screen that looked like woven paper. The sparse set – strips of grass to denote the country and giant tyres for the city – and few props were brought alive by the striking costumes. The country varmints’ outfits were a happy riot of multi-coloured crochet and hand knitting, contrasting with the city varmints’ uniform of grey with its pattern of tyre tracks. While Varmints was visually pleasing though, it did drag a little towards the end. The dancing began to get repetitive and I’m not sure there was enough happening to make it really entertaining for children.
