The Modernists

With no set and minimal props, the bar area provided the setting for Jeff Noon’s take on the style conscious, slavishly rule-obeying ‘individualists’ that pre-dated the mass tribalism of Mods. Performed in a hybrid of Burgess’s Nadsat and Shakespearean-style prose, this tale of an up-and-coming band all vying to be top dog closely mirrored A Clockwork Orange’s protagonists; right down to the King and pawn’s role reversals. Zeff Sheriff as leader Vincent really looked the part and gave the best performance, with strong (if occasionally over-eager) support from his fellow band mates. An unusual take on a multi-faceted subject.
