50 Shades of Feminism

A frankly ragged and unsatisfying look at contemporary feminism. The event started late with some hyperbolic and embarrassing introductions which segued into readings from the newly published book, ’50 Shades of Feminism’ (not a great idea, methinks, to reference E.L. James’ grisly and reductive ‘erotic’ trilogy of novels). The Q&A hinted at a much meatier and worthwhile debate with its questions on parenting, the wearing of the burka, etc, but insufficient time was given to them to enable any real answers or solutions to be reached. A deeply frustrating experience which failed to make the book appealing, or to provide enlightenment on its subject.
