Four in five Brighton and Hove schools rated good or outstanding
Four in five schools in Brighton and Hove are rated good or outstanding by the official watchdog Ofsted.
Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Ofsted’s most recent national statistics show that local authorities have an average of 74 per cent of schools rated good or outstanding.
“Brighton and Hove has 80 per cent of its schools rated at this level – a figure that represents an improvement of 8.6 per cent since last summer.”
In the current academic year Ofsted has described six local schools as good having previously found them to be only satisfactory. They are
- Blatchington Mill School
- Cottesmore St Mary’s Catholic School
- Hove Park School
- Moulsecoomb Primary School
- Patcham High School
- St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School
The council said: “Improvements have come across the board, not just in primary and secondary schools.
“Half of all the city’s special schools are now outstanding and the rest are good, an overall level that is nearly 20 per cent better than the national average.”
Councillor Sue Shanks, who chairs the council’s children and young people committee, said: “It’s been well known for a while now that we have very good primary schools here but performance at secondary level overall needed improving.
“Since the summer we have doubled the number of our community secondary schools rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.
“This is a terrific effort from our schools and the council’s school improvement team but I think everyone understands that further work is needed and nobody is being complacent.”
