Ji Liu

Bringing the Brighton Festival’s string of ever successful lunchtime concerts to a close, this sold out recital by the young Chinese pianist Ji Liu, had his audience experiencing a whole range of emotions from reverential wonder to bewilderment.

The Beethoven ‘Moonlight’, Chopin Nocturnes and the Prokofiev sonata no7 were all despatched with consumate control, however sandwiched between them was a selection of technical ‘study’ pieces by Gyorgy Ligeti comprising disconnected passages and much pummelling at the extreme ends of the keyboard, drawing gasps of laughter at one point, but driven through to rapturous applause and encore by this talented executant.
