The Impellers

A delayed start turned this into a midnight show; a slot that perfectly suited the Brighton funkateers. Their authentic arrangements could easily have been lost in seventies James Brown productions and The Godfather’s ‘Cold Sweat’ showcased the super-tight brass section. A down and dirty Dr John cover featured the classic blend of organ, wah-wah guitar; with sharp stabs of horns and the fatback drums locked into the groove. The Stax-like precision of this unit was evident on the old and new originals, with vocalist Clair Witcher whipping up the eager crowd, and a medley including the irresistible ‘Tighten Up’ completed a great night.
