King Lear – The Globe Theatre on tour

If you only see one play this year, make sure it is this one. The two pronged attack of the gloriously rich text and the company’s aim to bring the spirit of The Globe (open roof, minimal tech, an open and seen auditorium) to conventional theatres was a tour de force. It opened the eyes to those who have nuzzled on the teat of the drab run-of-the-mill touring company for too long. It brought theatre back to the audience, as it was in Shakespeare’s day. A collaborative theatre experience between actor and audience, both able to see the whites of the eyes. The actors were exquisite, the direction beautifully choreographed and shaped to perfection. An undeniable triumph!!!
