Hillfolk Noir
The Boise, Idaho trio may not have had a sold out crowd but they made sure the opening show of their UK tour was a night to remember. With double-bassist Mike Waite slapping away, husband and wife Travis and Ali Ward honkytonked through a variety of authentic old-time genres; he on slide guitar, she on washboard. Singing together they recalled a condensed ‘Old Crows’; covering the usual topics of women, whiskey and woe; but with added square dances and spooky singing saw on songs of pirates and zombies. Expert musicians all, this was a finger-pickin’, toe-tappin’, joy from start to finish.
