Brighton After Dark: 11th June 2013

Bmusic

Too many sad days/Too many Tuesday mornings/I thought of you today/I wished it was yesterday morning
Stop what you’re doing and go to the nearest window. Whatever the weather is, forget it, blank it out, and imagine the scene in front of you is being gently thudded by rain (obviously if this is what’s actually happening, just look at it). We’re not talking stormy, sexy, Hollywood ending rain, that Gosling would somehow look even dishier in. It’s dreary, soul-screwing rain, rain that’s come seemingly from nowhere but is here to stay until the end of time. It’s EastEnders rain, that’s what it is, Walford Rain. The sort of rain it would rain if Robbie Jackson ever got married. Now ask yourself this question: what day is it?

You said Tuesday, right? Tuesday is the ultimate nothing day, the weakling of the week’s brood. Mondays might be blue, but they are at least fuelled by weekend memories and water-cooler sniggers. Fun things happen on Wednesday, especially if you are on Orange. The Cure say it’s grey on Tuesdays. The world will never end on a Tuesday. No-one (except dear Robbie Jackson) would ever get married on a Tuesday. Tuesday’s bad, other days good.

Which (for the purposes of this piece) is exactly WHY we have our BMusic weekly meetings on a Tuesday. These are open sessions for anyone that wants to get involved with our little project, to suggest new ideas and maybe even partake in that grandest of British pastimes, boozing. We’re very nice, and LOVE new people so please don’t be shy. Next meeting is 6.30pm 11 June at The Royal Sovereign Pub on Preston Street. Come play! x

Brighton Noise

Andy Hinton on this week’s best gig
Is it officially summer yet or is it still spring? Whatever it is, the weather’s not great but as festival season hasn’t started yet there are tons of gigs all through June. This week is fairly rock themed with a number of genres covered; Metal, Blues, Classic ‘70s, Grunge. There’s also a reformed Brighton band and a famous actor/comedian playing Jazz (not Woody Allen).
At Komedia on Tuesday is the “visceral rock and roll” of Portland, Oregon’s Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside. On the same night Brighton’s Us Baby Bear Bones have a free EP launch at The Green Door Store with Noise favourites Speak Galactic in support.

If you like your rock heavy Earthtone9 are playing an intimate and presumably very loud gig at The Albert on Thursday. “Expect a full array of riffery and groove combined with movement and dynamism” says Anthony Giles.

On Saturday the current grunge influence continues with the scary Loom playing at The Hope. For those who take note of such things they are in the NME’s 20 bands to watch this year. Judging by the reported jam packed-ness of the NME Great Escape thing at The Haunt clearly people do. Anyway listening to Loom now they get the thumbs up from me.

For those who like their rock more “classic” another band on the rise, The Temperance Movement are at Audio the same night. Expect great musicianship and much 70’s US rock influences at this gig. Not sure if they do an encore of Freebird but they certainly sound like they should.

On Monday Hugh Laurie is at The Dome, not to make you laugh but playing jazz! If you can tear yourself away from that there’s always the return of Brighton’s own Electric Soft Parade at The Green Door Store. After much playing in other groups (Brakes, get back together, please) the brothers White are back in their original band with a new album to boot.

Over at The Haunt San Francisco’s The Fresh And Onlys are bringing their summery sound (something we desperately need, looking out of the window) – “they embody the relaxed, anything-goes vibe of the City by the Bay” says Kate Franklin. Indeed they do; a fine band who I would be watching if I wasn’t enjoying my own summery vibe by the Red Sea.
