Take Part: Health kick

With activities for everyone – how will you Take Part this fortnight?

With over 400 free or discounted activities, the Take Part Festival (Saturday 22 June – Sunday 7 July) is a celebration of all the different activities to be enjoyed in the city. The emphasis is on finding an activity to enjoy, whether a traditional sport or a more passive pastime such as healthwalks or yoga, to improve wellbeing.

Like much of the Take Part programme, the Active Forever session on Thursday 27 June is a free event. The aim of the day is to encourage older people to be more active. One featured group in Active Forever is the Zumba for Older People from Moulsecoomb. Zumba dance moves have been adapted to suit a slightly slower pace while still delivering an exercise workout for the over 50 age range.

Zumba participant Marion Guy said: “I started Zumba to get out and about. Also because it is different to anything I have done before. I very much enjoy the music and the dancing. And I enjoy the company of the other women in the group.”

Bowls is also being profiled along with 15 other sports at the Active Forever event. Bowls clubs across the city have joined up to promote their sport and invite new people to get involved in the game. Bowls clubs are running open days and taster sessions for those keen to find out more about this social game and would like to invite you to get involved.

So why not try something new during the Take Part Festival, whether it is Bowls, Zumba or something completely different?! The Active Forever event takes place Thursday 27 June at the King Alfred Leisure Centre (10am–12:30pm) and is free to attend.

Have you ever wanted to try paddle boarding, beach volleyball, karate or kayaking? Some of the sessions need to be pre-booked, others you can just turn up for.
