Brighton and Hove commuters delayed after accident shuts M23
Thousands of commuters from Brighton and Hove faced long delays this morning (Monday 24 June) after a crash led to the closure of the M23.
The crash also held up thousands of people driving to Gatwick Airport to catch a flight.
The crash happened at about 6am when a people carrier heading south left the road between junctions nine and eight near Gatwick.
Surrey Police said that no other vehicles were believed to be involved.
South East Coast Ambulance Service took one person with serious injuries to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, southwest London. The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance also attended.
Two other people were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
The road was shut in both directions for a while with the delays lasting for more than hours.
Surrey Police asked people to call 101 if they saw the dark vehicle when it left the road or beforehand.
