Portslade pupils raise funds for trip to help poor Costa Rican children

Sixth formers are walking from Portslade to the Palace Pier and back as part of a fundraising effort today (Tuesday 25 June).

The students from the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) are raising money for a trip to Costa Rica where they will be working with poor and disadvantaged children.

Four students, head of art Sharon Durham and Honor Wilson-Fletcher, who chairs the board of governors, set off on Saturday (29 June).

They will carry out conservation work in a national park during their first week on the trip which has been organised by Projects Abroad.

During the second week of their stay they will work in a day care for young poor children. In the morning they will help out with sport and in the afternoons their work will involve painting murals.

Sharon Durham said: “We’ve never done anything like this before – that’s why we’re calling ourselves the PACA pioneers.

“We hope the school will do more of this kind of thing in the future. It’s an amazing opportunity for the students.”
