Check the back of your lotions and potions for the ‘pot’ symbol with its lid askew – the shelf life of your product will be written here. Most sun tan lotions are only good for 12 months. Time to hit the shops?

As soon as this was applied to shoulders that had seen a bit too much sun, the sting and burn instantly disappeared. The redness started fading too. The skin didn’t peel and once the tan came out, it lasted longer than usual. A summer essential!
Aromatherapy Associates Rose Hydrating Face Mask, £36, from Space NK
This has a pleasant fragrance and was easy to apply, but the end result was a little disappointing as skin was not as hydrated as desired! Then again, being prone to dry skin, regular use may be required to reap the benefits. The transparent mask is perfect to apply on board a long-haul flight. Tip: keep in the fridge for some serious post-sun soothing!
