Brighton lifeboat crew look for volunteers

The RNLI Brighton lifeboat crew are looking for more volunteers to joint them – not just at sea but on dry land too.

The RNLI is holding a recruitment day on Saturday 20 July at the lifeboat station at Brighton Marina to give people an insight into what the roles involve.

The crew provide a 24/7 on call search and rescue service along the coastline between Newhaven and Shoreham.

A spokesman said: “If the thrill of a shout and being part of a team appeals to you, you could help save lives at sea by joining our crew of dedicated volunteers.

“All the crew at the station think nothing of giving up their time when their pager goes off to answer a call for help from someone in trouble at sea.

“You need to be committed, able, aged 17-40 and live or work close to Brighton Lifeboat Station at Brighton Marina.

“Our crew come from all walks of life, very few are from a maritime background but all train together and relish being part of a close, effective search and rescue unit.”

There has been a lifeboat station at Brighton since 1824 and the current Lifeboat is the B-852 Random Harvest, the latest Atlantic 85 B class lifeboat.

She started service in late 2011 after a naming ceremony at the station and has been involved in more than 75 shouts.

Those preferring to stay dry and on land can help as volunteers in the fundraising team or sea safety education team.

The recruitment day runs from 11am to 2pm.
