Heath Quartet – Haydn, Tippett & Mendelssohn

This was a very well judged programme for the Clifton Montpelier Powis Community Alliance. The Heath Quartet just radiated their obvious enjoyment of these composers. At times they seemed to be playing from memory, their delivery was so spontaneous, their rapport so intimate. The Haydn and Mendelssohn, such perfectly crafted classical pieces, balanced well with the more challenging Tippett. His last quartet, rich in complexity and energy, included some sublime stratospheric high notes, sustained beautifully by Oliver Heath (1st Violin). The audience actually seemed intoxicated by the wonderful climax of the Mendelssohn. What a joyful finale to a summer’s day!
