Brighton Philharmonic (four members) and Rebecca Holt (piano) – Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet

Although it’s considered a good introduction to Schubert, the ‘Trout’ quintet sounds a little fiddly and unsettled to this reviewer, fluttering around melodies but never quite settling down or truly soaring. It was well performed however, centring around Holt’s delicate high piano playing, and the highlight was a fun and brilliantly executed violin part by Daniel Bhattacharya reminiscent of a fiddle in an Irish jig. Part of the ongoing ‘Music in the Music Room’ series, the Royal Pavilion is a wonderful setting for classical music, a nook of culture and beauty in the centre of town that provides a lovely evening’s entertainment.
