Stage: Pink Fringe
Pink Fringe Does Pride: a trio of theatrical & performance events for this year’s Brighton Pride
There’s a lot more to Pride than just the crowds, the floats and the park. Brighton’s own purveyors of queer culture, Pink Fringe are presenting a programme of cutting edge performance for Brighton Pride 2013. First up on Friday 2 August is I Wanna Be Loved By You at the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre. Combining theatre, cabaret and music, a stellar line up interrogate the cult of celebrity.
This is followed on Pride Saturday (3 August) by the Lip Sinkers & Lorraine Bowen, lighting up the Marlborough Theatre with costumes and chaos. Finally on Sunday 4 August, to round off the weekend, there will be the free Pink Fringe Picnic at Jubilee Square, where micro-performances in bathing huts and crafty fun for all the family will ensue.
Pink Fringe is delighted to have, amongst the performers in I Wanna Be Loved By You, the esteemed performance artist David Hoyle, who is rarely seen on the Brighton theatre circuit.
A cabaret performer who is not afraid of questioning accepted truths, his exploration of our obsession with celebrity is sure to be darkly entertaining. Also gracing the stage will be local legend Boogaloo Stu, whose pop songs and irreverent humour will lend a different dimension to the evening. Other artists featuring in the performance are Stacy Makishi, drag fabulist Dickie Beau and the nationally acclaimed Gary Clarke Dance Company.
On Saturday, for the first time, drag superstars The Lip Sinkers will be teaming up with the eccentric queen of song Lorraine Bowen to perform a special Pride version of their show. Combining the stockings and stilettos of the Lip Sinkers with the polyester house-coats of Lorraine Bowen, this new host will bring her accordion and some quirky songs about apple crumble for those who fancy a sit down and a chuckle.
Following on from last year’s very successful Pink Fringe Picnic, they are occupying Jubilee Square in association with nearby arts venue, The Basement. For this free community event, the gorgeous Victorian bathing huts created for the Nightingale’s Dip Your Toe project will be rolling out of their hiding place, each a micro-performance venue to surprise and delight the crowds with interesting happenings.
Suitable for all the family and running throughout the afternoon, there will be music, life-drawing and craft activities with bearded drag queens – you know, just the usual afternoon out in Brighton! Remember to bring your picnic hampers!
