Brighton Big Screen teams up with local children’s charity

The Brighton Big Screen is to support a local children’s charity over the coming month.

Murray Media, the company behind the Big Screen on the beach, has teamed up with the Starr Trust, which helps 10 to 18-year-olds fulfil their potential in sports, arts and education.

The Big Screen will be on the beach near the Brighton Wheel, at Dalton’s Bastion, just to the east of the Palace Pier. Last year a smaller version of the big screen was nearer the West Pier.

Films, sport and CBeebies shows for children will be screened on the beach from next Tuesday (30 July) until Monday 26 August, at the end of the bank holiday weekend.

Starr Trust director Darren Abrahams said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen by Murray Media as the charity partner for Brighton’s Big Screen this summer.

“We’re both small organisations working hard to make a difference in the city and we understand the importance of partnerships in making a bigger impact.

“It’s great for us to be able to reach a larger audience through the Big Screen, especially at a time when we are expanding and evolving what we do.

“It’s our fifth birthday this year and we’re very excited to be celebrating it on the beach with a good movie and a bag of popcorn.”

The Starr Trust has been supporting children’s projects in Brighton and Hove since 2008 and aims to champion young people and give them a helping hand when they need it most.

The trust awards bursaries to 10 to 18-year-olds for sports, arts and education in addition to mentoring and advice to help them fulfil their potential.

All donations made at the Big Screen will go back into this work with young people in the local community.

Bill Murray, the managing director of Murray Media, said: “Working with the trust has been a real eye-opener.

“It has been amazing to see what is actually achievable when you combine bright, joined up thinking with such a professional and dedicated team of people.”

Each weekday morning from 10am until noon the Starr Trust will be hosting the Big Screen’s Kids Scene.

The two-hour slot is intended to entertain children of all ages with short films, stories and CBeebies television programmes all on the big screen and free.
