Simon Donald + Sean McLoughlin

This Edinburgh preview showcased new work from Simon Donald, stand-up and erstwhile co-creator of Viz, the foul-mouthed, top-shelf comic beloved by fans of juvenile humour around the world. Sean McLoughlin, on his first tour, provided an hour of entertainingly bleak bitter outpourings before our headliner, which thankfully proved funny enough to survive some overly affected mannerisms. Donald’s material played to his obvious strengths (badly photoshopped images on a screen; un-PC swearing; distinctively Tyneside references), with his charmingly simple listing of metrosexual activities sometimes belly-laugh funny. Ventures into musical comedy fell flat though Donald himself was likeable enough to show there’s more to his career than offensive cartoons.
