Lorry driver arrested after crash closes A27 Brighton Bypass

A lorry driver has been arrested after the crash that led to the closure of the A27 Brighton Bypass yesterday (Thursday 25 July).

The eastward-bound lorry crashed into a slow-moving people carrier shortly after emerging from the Southwick Tunnel.

The 44-year-old lorry driver was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment for minor injuries.

He was later arrested by Sussex Police on suspicion of causing someone else an injury by driving dangerously.

A 79-year-old man, a passenger in the people carrier, suffered serious but not life-threatening head injuries. He was flown to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

The 49-year-old man who was driving the people carrier suffered broken bones in the crash and was taken to Royal Sussex.

The road was closed in both directions after the lorry overturned and smashed through the central reservation.

The Highways Agency was expected to reopen the road fully this morning (Friday 26 July).
