Deputy Police Commissioner resigns

Steve Waight has announced that he will stand down as Sussex Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner.

A statement on the website of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “The move will see him pursue other opportunities outside of the Office of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.”

Confirming the decision taken by Mr Waight, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “Steve has informed me that, due to personal reasons, he has decided not to continue in his role as deputy.

“This means he will leave the team early September, after working through his notice period.

“I am sorry to see Steve go and would like to thank him for the enormous contribution he has made during the early establishment of my office.

“I wish him every success for the future and look forward to continuing to work with him in his role as a West Sussex county councillor.”

Mr Waight was formerly the chairman of the Sussex Police Authority which was abolished to make way for elected police commissioners.

He served six months of his two-year contract as Mrs Bourne’s deputy.

She appointed him earlier this year even though the panel that scrutinises her work deciding against recommending him for the role.

Mrs Bourne is not expected to appoint a replacement.
