Six people rescued from fire in centre of Brighton

Firefighters rescued six people from a fire in the old post office in Ship Street, Brighton, at lunchtime today (Saturday 17 August).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that the fire was believed to have started accidentally.

Eight fire crews were sent to the scene from Preston Circus and Roedean in Brighton, Hove, Lewes, Newhaven and Seaford with West Sussex Fire and Rescue sending support.

And the South East Coast Ambulance Service also turned out.

Smoke was reported coming out windows in the building just after 1pm.

By 2.10pm the fire was out and firefighters were searching the building. They left the scene just before 5pm.

Ship Street was closed while the fire was put out and North Street was also closed for a while.
