Bare cheek: Hove Factually
Five more fantastic facts you didn’t know about fantabulous Hove.
1 Whenever anyone in Hove wishes to move house, he must first have the property exorcised, not by a priest, but by Ed “Stewpot” Stewart.
2 It is a little known fact that there is, buried under George Street, an atom bomb which is to be detonated in the event of foreign invasion. The only three people in the UK who know the password that will set it off are former governor of Hong Kong Chris Patten, Upstairs Downstairs actor Christopher Beeny, and heavy metal pomp-rock composer Jim Steinman.
3 Controversial singer Madonna’s daughter Lourdes was conceived in the Courtlands Hotel in Hove. Had the child been a boy he would have been called “Aldrington.”
4 Hollywood film director and amateur marine biologist James Cameron has included a subliminal shot of Hove Greyhound Stadium in each of his movies, from The Terminator to Avatar.
5 In the 1939 Leslie Charteris detective novel, Pardon The Saint, amateur sleuth Simon Templar takes a holiday in Hove and uncovers a white slavery operation on the site of what is now Tesco.
