The Be Good Tanyas

Beautiful three-way harmonies and hushed acoustic guitars, banjos and double bass set the sweet and pretty mood for this popular Canadian alt-country band. Lead singer Frazey Ford’s voice had an impressive range and delicate quality to it, with most of their songs sounding like a quiet break on an album between more upbeat numbers. Covers of Peter Rowan’s ‘Midnight Moonlight’ and Neil Young’s ‘Birds’ were the highlights, more moving and ethereal than the band’s own TV soundtrack-friendly fare. The slow tempo needed some variation to break the mood up, but the evening passed pleasantly enough, and the friendly crowd were delighted.
