Brighton and Hove experts to offer free electric blanket tests

Safety experts are to test electric blankets for free across Brighton and Hove over three days next week.

Trading standards officers from Brighton and Hove City Council and fire safety officers from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are joining forces to carry out the tests.

The fire service is also offering to fit free smoke alarms.

The free electric blanket testing sessions are due to take place on

  • Monday 9 September at Preston Circus Fire Station
  • Tuesday 10 September at Hove Town Hall
  • Wednesday 11 September at Roedean Fire Station

The tests run from 9am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm each day.

The council said: “It may still be summer but now is a good time for anyone who uses an electric blanket to plan ahead to ensure it is safe and sound to use this winter.”

About 5,000 fires a year across the country are blamed on faulty electric blankets – and last year almost one in three blankets tested in Brighton and Hove were found to be unsafe.

The fire service recommended that all electric blankets were tested every three years and replaced every ten years.

It said that people should check for wear and tear, dampness, scorch marks and flex damage before using their blankets this year.

And the council added: “When buying a new blanket, shoppers are advised to look out for the British and European standard and safety certification mark.”
