Brighton and Hove teachers belonging to two main teaching unions to strike

Teachers in Brighton and Hove belonging to the profession’s two main unions have been called out on strike on Thursday 17 October.

The strike has been called by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters/Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).

The unions said that yesterday (Thursday 5 September) that the strike was in protest over adverse changes to their pay, pensions and working conditions being made by Education Secretary Michael Gove.

The unions have threatened to hold a separate national one-day strike before Christmas if the dispute has not been resolved.

Between them, the unions said that they represented nine in ten teachers.

Mr Gove defended his proposed changes yesterday, including the introduction of performance-related pay.
