Brighton Marina’s Kirsty Pollard on the Brighton Triathlon
Brighton Marina has hosted the Brighton Triathlon since the early days of the sport in the UK and provides a fantastic location. Established in 1991, the event has continued to grow every year. This event is well known well beyond the local triathlon community as the sport has grown from a minority activity to its current Olympic status. The race is ever popular among seasoned athletes and novices alike due to excellent swimming conditions, a challenging cycle and scenic run. This year it takes place on Sunday 15 September 2013.
The 1km swim takes place in the shelter of the inner harbour against the backdrop of the cliffs among some of the Marina’s most impressive boats. It is popular with experienced athletes as the clear and calm water provides for great racing. For the less experienced it is a chance to swim and race in open water without swallowing half the sea!
The 32k cycle heads east from Brighton Marina, past Roedean School, Blind Veterns UK, through Ovingdean village, and up to Brighton Racecourse on the edge of the South Downs. Heading back down towards the Marina this circuit is then repeated before returning to Brighton Marina along the coast road. This is one of the hilliest courses.
Finally the 8km run heads out and back on the undercliff walk from Brighton to Rottingdean. With the white backdrop from the chalk cliffs, views out to sea on a sunny day and blue skies you couldn’t ask for a more picturesque location.
A team relay race provides for the novice, those recovering fitness, or those just looking for a bit of fun in an event.
There are some team places and this is a good way of putting a toe in the water. Full details are available from www.brightonmarina.co.uk/whats-on.aspx
