The Orwells

After an energetic hook-heavy set from The Semper Teens, the Chicagoan Great Escape heroes and this month’s next-big-thing kicked off with the super-catchy ‘Mallrats’, which set the standard for the evening, with Mario Cuomo prowling the stage and dance floor; part Robert Plant, part Cousin It. Still teenagers, their youthful confidence and exuberance shone throughout a high-octane set of new wave classics in the making. A mix of the best US and UK indie bands, they ended a spirited set with a Stooges-influenced garage number before closing befittingly with a blistering cover of ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’.
