Fallen Angels
That a play from such a different era (the 1920s) still has the frivolity and wit to entertain is testament to Noel Coward’s enduring appeal. It is a conceit which both celebrates, and satirises, the lot of the modern feminine, and while it may represent a tale of “suburban sluts” (the Daily Express, 1925) it is wickedly amusing, and rife with mischievous asides and lyrical quips. The cast were excellent, Jenny Seagrove and Sara Crowe providing standout performances as the protagonists Julia and Jane. A guilty pleasure which showcases Coward at his best; and one that belies a deceptively astute, if comedic, commentary on the human condition.
