Ethan Johns
The Brit Award winning producer-turned-performer cut an unassuming figure as he stood alone on the stage and played selections from his debut and forthcoming albums. Clearly influenced by the great ’60s folk singers, there were elements of Fred Neil and Paul Simon throughout, but his rich, soporific part-spoken, part-singing voice made Bill Callahan the closest comparison. A few electric slide blues stompers and a well-chosen Gillian Welch cover kept it lively but the evening belonged to the well-crafted, lovingly-delivered ballads. Special mention must be made to the superb openers Trevor Moss & Hannah Lou, who set the scene perfectly.
