Most Brighton and Hove schools to be closed by teachers’ strike tomorrow

Nine out of ten Brighton and Hove secondary schools and almost all the primary schools in the area will be closed tomorrow (Thursday 17 October) when teachers strike.

The new King’s School in Portslade is the only secondary school expected to stay open as unions step up their protest against pay and pension changes.

The strike has been called by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).

A protest march is due to start in the centre of Brighton at 11am. It should set off from Pavilion Gardens, head up the A23 at Gloucester Place, up Trafalgar Street to Queen’s Road and down to West Street. It is expected to finish with a rally at the Brighton Centre.

Brighton and Hove City Council listed most of the schools that are expected to be closed on its website.

The council said: “The decision to close a school is made by the head teacher in consultation with their governors and not the council.”
