Washed Out

Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out, is primarily known as one of the figure heads of that oft maligned, late-noughties genre ‘chillwave’. Unlike his most notable contemporary Toro Y Moi, who performed in the same venue in a few months back (and generally fell flat***), Ernest performed an enthralling set.

While heavy reverb, the most identifiable element of his sound, is still a factor, it was not as prominent this time around. Ernest’s vocals were clearer, with the distinctive echo effect accentuating rather than drenching out the other elements, whilst a full backing band locked into addictive, muscular grooves. Whereas before everything was lost in a hazy wash, Ernest has fulfilled his potential by making music that you could dance to, to music that you will dance to.
