Hundreds complete annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run

Hundreds of pre-1905 vehicles completed the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run yesterday (Sunday 3 November).

The first cars set off from Hyde Park just before 7am along a route which largely follows the A23 through Croydon, Crawley and Burgess Hill to Brighton seafront.

The event is not a race, although some of the drivers are known to have a competitive streak.

All of them aim, though, to reach Madeira Drive in Brighton by 4.30pm. Given the deterioration in the weather yesterday afternoon, it was a timely deadline.

About 600 cars were entered in this year’s run and thousands of people watched along the way.

It was the 80th re-enactment of the Emancipation Run held in 1896 to mark the raising of the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph.
