Contemporary choreographer Wayne McGregor’s latest piece with the Random Dance company came to Brighton on tour, after an initial run at Sadler’s Wells. The first half was sensational, with dramatic lighting and ten talented, lithe dancers undulating and contorting in a mesmerising manner. The choreography was sublime, with dancers’ minute hand movements and expressions a delicate joy to watch. An ambient soundtrack from A Winged Victory For The Sullen perfectly complemented the performance, with strings, Tim Hecker-like drones and piano tones a fascinating work in its own right. 3D TVs with Ravi Deppres’ installations on were intrguing, but a little blurry and ineffectual. The later parts unfortunately brought little new to proceedings and this reviewer’s mind did wander, but overall the experimental piece was captivating, creative and unique.
